The Longest Day of the Year is Coming Up – Get Outside and Celebrate!

Did you know the longest day of the year is almost here?  The Summer Solstice is on June 21st.  That means the year is already half over.  I like to make these little special days into an occasion to make sure I set aside time with my loved ones.  This year the longest day happens to fall Father’s Day so you might want to use this event to make a whole weekend of fun times.

You could start on Saturday night and ring in the “Half-New-Year” by pitching a tent in your back yard, building a fire and roasting hot dogs for supper.  You could finish off your meal with s’mores for dessert.  When everyone is finished eating and the embers of the fire are glowing hot, tell some ghost stories.  Maybe you could tell a few stories from your past.  Children love hearing about their parents’ childhood.  My siblings and I would listen to my dad for hours as he recalled stories from his past.  Make your stories interesting and your kids will be sitting on the edge of their seats.

Buy your tent, fire pit and roasting sticks today so they will be here before the longest day of the year!

And to add to the fun, here’s the original S’mores recipe from a 1927 Girl Scout handbook!
